Disappointing and under performing are buzz words easily applied to traditional blue bloods through the first month of the season. Gone is the explosive offense we’ve grown accustomed to from Oklahoma prompting a ratings adjustment. Is Spencer Rattler even the guy there in Norman? Speaking of offensive ineptitude, Clemson’s attack makes the Sooners look like an offensive dynamo. Losing to Georgia Week 1 gets a pass but lackluster showings every week since dropped Clemson from our Top 5. We’d like to welcome Michigan into the mix with the Wolverines moving past Texas A&M into the Top 10 after an Aggies outright loss to Arkansas.

Overrated: BYU Cougars
The BYU Cougars are 4-0, and have somehow convinced the AP Poll they’re worthy of the #13 ranking this week. Beating ranked (at the time) Utah and Arizona State seems to have made quite the impression on most of the country but we’re not sold on this Cougar squad. Their overall strength of schedule to this point is not even in the Top 50. Combine that with struggles against both Arizona and USF (yes, we know Jarren Hall didn’t play) where they scraped by with one score victories as double-digit favorites and there’s reason for concern.
Anything but Efficient
BYU boasts a net +0.4 yards per play and a defensive efficiency ranking outside the Top 60. The defense is also a bit banged up. Kalani Sitake noted that the team may have some questionable players for this upcoming game at Utah State on Friday night. None of these factors are a good sign for a team that continues to get gashed on the ground and currently sits at 115th in EPA per rush allowed. BYU’s fortunate to be tied for 8th in the country in turnover margin, a metric that can’t be relied upon to win or cover every week. We have BYU outside of our Top 25 with some popular efficiency rankings such as SP+ listing them closer to the 50th best team in the country. Bet the Board has the Cougars closer to the 35th best team.

Underrated: Texas Longhorns
Is Texas … back? Here we go again! Despite considerable professional money arriving against them last week, Texas easily covered as 9-point favorites taking home The Chancellor’s Spurs for the fourth straight year. More importantly, the performance may cement this offensive unit as one of the country’s best. Texas now boasts a 95% Red Zone scoring percentage, averages 7.1 yards per play, and is imbued with confidence heading into their game with TCU. The Longhorns haven’t punted in TWO games!

Horns Up
Quarterback Casey Thompson is playing outstanding football. Coaches are raving about his work ethic in the film room and his willingness to prepare every week. Since his insertion into the starting role, Texas has scored 18 touchdowns and kicked one field goal across 22 possessions. You have to give head coach Steve Sarkisian a big tip of the cap for what he’s accomplished thus far in his abbreviated tenure as leader of the ‘Horns. We have Texas inside our Top 20. Suddenly the early season loss at Arkansas doesn’t look nearly as alarming.
