We are down to our final 12 games of the college football season, with the (predictable) favorites handling business Saturday night for a much anticipated rematch in the title game. Below are the point spreads for the five games on January 1st, as well as the National Championship, with opening lines in bold and the current number to the right. We also take a look at NFL Wild Card Weekend opening point spreads, too.
Notable College Football Opening Bowl Game Point Spreads from BetOnline.ag:
Iowa vs. Mississippi State (-5.5, -7-120)
Kentucky vs. Penn State (-4.5-115, -6.5)
LSU vs. UCF (+7.5-115, +7-105)
Washington vs Ohio State (-4.5, -6.5-115)
Texas vs. Georgia (-10, -12.5)
Clemson vs. Alabama (-9, -6)
- One of the largest New Year’s Eve bowl game moves features Ohio State. The Buckeyes are currently favored by 6.5 against the Washington Huskies in the Rose Bowl. With the line opening 4.5, and news of this being Urban Meyer’s retirement game, we saw this tick out to the current price. If this game gets to -7 (with more than 70% of tickets on the Buckeyes), will pro bettors look to back the Huskies at that price?
- In the National Championship game, we saw Alabama open 9-point favorites at BetOnline.ag, but since we’ve seen significant professional money come in on the dog, driving this line down below a touchdown. While Clemson dismantled Notre Dame, covering by more than two touchdowns, Alabama started strong, leading 28-0 in the 2nd quarter before the Sooners woke up. We also saw the total open at 61, before dropping to 59.5 across the market.
Other Bowl Games This Week:
Virginia Tech vs. Cincinnati (-6.5)
Pittsburgh vs. Stanford (-4)
Michigan State vs. Oregon (-1.5)
Missouri vs. Oklahoma State (+9)
Northwestern vs. Utah (-7)
North Carolina State vs. Texas A&M (-7)
NFL Wild Card Weekend Opening Spreads:
Indianapolis @ Houston (-2.5, 47.5)
Seattle @ Dallas (-1-120, 41.5)
LA Chargers @ Baltimore (-2-20, 42)
Philadelphia @ Chicago (-5.5, 42)
- Dallas opened 1-point favorites, shot out to a strong 2.5, and even touched 3 at some shops where we finally saw some resistance. The Cowboys elected to play most of their starters for the entire game against the Giants, winning a meaningless game 36-35. Seattle snuck out a home victory themselves with a game winning field goal against Arizona. The total opened 41.5 and has jumped up to 42/42.5 at some shops. With two mobile quarterbacks and above average defenses, we have a chance to see Russell Wilson and Dak Prescott use their legs to lead their offenses to success.
- Sunday afternoon presents a rematch from a Saturday Night game two weeks ago, when Baltimore went to Los Angeles and won 22-10 as 4-point underdogs. We’ve seen a slight market adjustment for the rematch, as the Ravens are now 3-point favorites after their emotional AFC North clinching win over Cleveland. LA looked sluggish, but took care of business in Denver, and now has the chance to see this offense twice in three weeks. The total has settled at 42, which is a tick lower than where it closed on December 22nd.
